Shareholders Up Demands for Workplace Diversity Data Seen by Few

Shareholders are increasingly asking corporations to reveal gender and diversity data about their workforces, with their proposals to publicly disclose confidential, government-only figures gaining strong support during this year’s proxy season.Companies, including Union Pacific Corp., Nike Inc., Moody’s Investors Service Inc., and Walmart Inc., have been pressed by investors to publicly release data they report to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which is responsible for enforcing workplace anti-discrimination laws. The investor pressure comes as the SEC considers requiring its own corporate disclosures on diversity and other environmental, social, and governance matters.
